Winter
When Caltrans posts chain controls on SR-18 or SR-38, they are enforced. Four-wheel drive with snow-rated tyres is usually enough; two-wheel drive needs chains in the boot, and rental cars rarely come with them.
Big Bear can be clear while the road up is closed. Caltrans QuickMap has live conditions for both highways.
Two hours from Los Angeles in good weather. Sunday afternoons down the mountain, and any Friday night in a storm, are slower.
Nights drop below freezing well outside winter. The heat works; the thin air still surprises people who came up from the coast.
